Taking his professional name from the French pronunciation of his initials, R. T.
(for Romain de Tirtoff), Erte was a major contributor to, and influence on, style
and design of the twentieth century. As a young man, the Russian-born design-
er left St. Petersburg for Paris, where he created 250 covers and numerous
drawings in a distinctive Art Deco style for Harper's Bazaar magazine.
Thirty of his loveliest costumes, drawn for the publication between 1915 and
1922, have been superbly adapted by Marty Noble. Coloring enthusiasts will
delight in adding hues to the graceful figures in this dazzling collection.
